How to make an F7_Step 4

Extruded edges to full length of loco.

Added some panel detail and front plough.

Added step and fuel tank.

Added the GP9 bogies.

Changed top vent panel, noticed I was making an F3!

Added the window and some minor side details. Also noticed I had the side door window wrong so made some changes to the door shape also.

I am looking to create a new shadow bake and build up the GWR green livery again.

We are also looking to improve some of the rolling stock for TS 2012, The unit which I think was in need of the most work for the UK was the Class 166.

How to make an F7_Step3

Shaped polygons around headlight, sliced the nose polygons, not sure why just thought it would be wise to cut up for adding any detail. I can always remove them if not needed.

Created window strut from connecting nose to roof. Also added bottom lip under nose. MOst of these shapes are created by dragging and scaling edges.

Created a line for the window then lofted a shape around the line to give it thickness.

This bit took a little longer as I stitched in the window frame to the nose and body section. I try to keep all curves smooth. Any bad angles will show up in the game engine.

I deleted the side wall and extruded the nose edge polys, cutting in the windows and door. You can see it taking shape now.

Extrude edges down to follow outline of plan.

Make simple body shape.

Grab edges and extrude, I did this as many times as I felt were needed.

I then created a smooth corner to join up the front and side.

I then dragged and shaped the headlight edges, then dragging each vert to almost meet the nose.

For a number of random reasons we need a new F7 A and B unit for TS2012. The lovely task has been passed onto me, (that will teach me walk into the boss's office empty handed!)

Anyway, I scanned in the plans from my Big red Diesel book

I then set about nose section. The plan was to spline model the section as I had done for my new deltic but as I started it at the end of the day I just started pushing some shapes around to see how I would do.

Make a Sphere.

Scale the sphere in the z axis.

Scale the sphere in the x axis.

I then deleted three quarters of the sphere to leave me with a 'corner'.

Using vertex soft selection I tweaked the profile of this corner from above and 2 sides to match the plans.

I then made a cylinder in the front view and deleted the unwanted polys, this I will use for the headlight.

Ok, so while I play about with Liveries Tom and Phil are working on the switcher cab. As you can see it is all modelled, mapped and baked.

Here is a shot of it in my lighting scene, some work still to remove the dark shadows but it has a nice chunky feel.

A special thank you goes out to Bill Platt who went out his way to get into a cab of a SW1500 to take the photos we required to make a high poly model. Without his images this switcher may not have been made.

Thanks to a couple of good comments from our Beta team and me tracking down a picture of a green 111 in my First Generations DMU book, I have been able to update the front section with 4 digit headcode and get the correct trim detail.

Still need to swap the Leyland Engine for a Rolls-Royce one, so off to the engine shed for an update over the weekend.
